DIOSAS Y PECES
“Through an understanding of what the Goddess was, we can better understand nature and we can build our ideologies so that it will be easier for us to live.”
Marija Gimbutas.
It is when I have clay in my hands that I become aware of the intelligence is within this matter and by wedging it and feeling it between my fingers and listen to it; I fallow its own energy and create. Hand building with clay, has been a process that has been living within me for a long period of time, and it is now that I feel I am having a great deal of connection with this matter and by not putting any resistance and fallowing its energy, all these beautiful pieces come to life.
The process of working with clay is all based on the surprise element since there is so many factors to be taken in consideration; time, humidity, dryness, low fire to bisque, high fire to glace and then at the end, must of the time, the result one gets is totally unsuspected. The pieces have warped inside the kiln because of the high temperatures and the glazes have mixed in an unexpected way. The result can never be frustrating, it is always a big surprise that I have learned to re-appreciate it and re-evaluate it to live happy with them.
Some of these pieces are part of an investigation in process, based on figurines found all around the world which sometimes represented goddesses or maybe were simple representations of mother Earth which people usually worshipped as the cause of life because of their close relation with Earth, its crops and weather. Venus of Willendorf. Others, (fish and vases) are the result of playing with a long coil or throwing a slab and being inspired by the random shape I get by hitting it on the working bench.
